George RR Martin: Writing Ability In The Birth Chart

Rather than speculate about how tonight’s series finale of Game of Thrones is going to end (just like everyone else is) I’m going to go back to the very beginning: the creator of the series, George RR Martin. George was born September 20th 1948, 9:25 PM, in Bayonne New Jersey. His birth chart is (not surprisingly) particularly instructive when it comes to looking for signs of writing ability.

If we want to look for writing ability in the birth chart, the first two places to check out are Mercury and the 3rd house. George has Mercury in Libra, and (going by Whole Sign Houses as I do) and the Moon is the ruler of his Third House. What’s interesting to note is that his Mercury gets three major aspects from other planets: one is an opposition to the Moon (again, ruling his Third House), a sextile from Jupiter (strongly placed in the Sign it rules, Sagittarius) and a sextile from Uranus (which is in his Third House and is the ruler of his Aquarius Midheaven).

This would seem to point out lots of writing ability, but if you’ve known many writers, you know there’s a difference between “ability to write” and “ability to make a living from writing.” The usual place we look for money is the Second House, which is George RR Martin’s case is ruled by — surprise! — Mercury.

Which leads to my personal George RR Martin story:

In 1991 (about five years before the first Game Of Thrones book was published) I was on the board of directors of a science fiction and fantasy convention called Con-Version, and George RR Martin was a guest. I spent an hour interviewing him in front of an audience. I had just finished reading one of his earlier works, Fevre Dream. I spent a large portion of my time with him praising it and asking questions about it. At the end of the panel, George turned to me and said the most truly heartfelt, writer-like thing anyone has ever said to me:

“That was great. Next time though, can you talk about a book of mine that’s still in print?”

Oh George. If you ever read these words, you are My Writing Hero.
