An Astrologer’s Worst Five Synastry Aspects

In a previous entry here, I mentioned my five favorite astrological aspects when comparing two birth charts. I made it clear that they weren’t necessarily the best, and that having a one or two of these between two peoples charts did not guarantee relationship success — but they sure can help.

This time around, I would like to discuss the five synastry aspects that I find to be the most problematic for a relationship. Just as one or two good aspects won’t guarantee a good relationship, a couple of bad ones don’t necessarily spell doom. But if you find yourself in a relationship where one or more of these happening between your two charts? You better be ready to roll up your sleeves and do the extra work.

Person A’s Mercury square Person B’s Mercury
It’s a cliche to say the communication is vital for a relationship. And it’s a cliche because it’s absolutely true. When there is a conflict between your Mercury and the other person’s Mercury, sometimes even simple concepts can get lost in the chatter.

Person A’s Moon square Person B’s Moon
You’re probably most familiar with this basic concept when it comes to Sun Signs: “Leo is square Scorpio, therefore Leo and Scorpio shouldn’t be together and that sort of thing. That’s an oversimplification, but the square aspect takes on new weight when the Moons are involved. The Moon is your basic emotional core, and if you are in a relationship with someone whose emotional needs inherently conflict with yours? It can ultimately be a deal-breaker.

Person A’s Moon square Person B’s Saturn
…Likewise, when someone’s Saturn is having a chilling effect on your Moon, you’re going to have a hard time feeling comfortable with that person. Possibly very hard.

Person A’s Venus square or opposite Person B’s Saturn
Venus lends sweetness to a relationship. Saturn can make things sour. And believe me there are times when the sweet and sour combination does NOT work well at all. Imagine buying thoughtful little gifts for someone all the time and that person is always rejecting them for some petty reason (from your perspective).

Person A’s Saturn square Person B’s Saturn
To me this is the single most difficult one to work with. Just as a happy aspect between your Saturn and another person’s Saturn could be a great strength in a relationship, Saturn conflict is going to be extremely hard to work with. You may never have the same long-term plans or be able to build a foundation together.
