“Bad” Planets, Good Results: Mars In Cancer, Mars In Libra
Mars rules drive, ambition, temper, and sex. It is arguably the most action-oriented planet in the Zodiac. so naturally you would want to have your Mars in one of the good places for it get anywhere in life, right? When Mars is one of its “good” places, like an Aries (which Mars rules) or Capricorn (where it is exalted) it’s usually considered to be a good thing.
But what about when Mars is in one of those opposite placements? Mars in Cancer is generally considered to be too sensitive and too emotional for its own good. Cancer has a much stronger association with nurturing and with sentimentality than it does with winning battles or climbing mountains.
Mars in Libra, on the other hand? Libra is well known as a peacemaker sign, one that’s more interested in maintaining relationships than breaking them off. Look up a lot of standard sources Mars in Libra, and you’ll soon get the impression that this placement doesn’t know where or how to direct its aggression.
But of course, both people and their birth charts are a lot more then just one simple description of one simple placement. here are some examples that may violate your usual expectations of Mars in Cancer or Mars in Libra:
Keanu Reeves has Mars in Cancer and does not shy away from action roles in his films. I also have it on good authority that he’s considered sexy by many. It’s the same Mars story with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chris Hemsworth.
There is a theory among some psychologists that humor is just redirected anger and aggression, and if that’s the case it certainly explains Robin Williams. Is Mars in Cancer afraid to get a little bloody and gory if need be? I don’t know, how about you ask Stephen King, who also has that placement.
As for Mars in Libra? It gave us Elvis Presley’s hip action, the raw ambition of Bill Gates, the creative venting of anger by John Lennon and Eminem, and the bravery of Nelson Mandela, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, and the Dalai Lama.
And yes, Simon Cowell has Mars in Libra too. He may have the reputation for being kind of a jerk when he’s voting down an act, but next time you see him on one of his shows, pay close attention. He’s almost always constructive in his criticisms and is rarely truly angry. And if you think otherwise, I’ll just have to push this big red button and send you offstage…
