NBC, Mercury Retrograde, And A Complete S–tshow

The thing about Mercury retrograde is not just that it makes trouble for communications and contracts and short trips and suck. It also requires attention to all the fiddly little details with everything that normally works out just fine.

Case in point: NBC is currently filming a competition show Ultimate Slip N’ Slide (because they’ll make a TV show about anything, right?). It features the classic summertime diversion first developed by Wham-O, the people who brought you such classic childhood distractions as the Frisbee and the Hula Hoop.

Ever been part of a television production? Even a fairly small and straightforward production involves hundreds (if not thousands) of little details. The cast and crew need to be tended to. Location permits have to be acquired. There’s hair and makeup and you have to make sure no brand name products are visible (unless it’s a product placement) and so on.

One more thing? If you are producing a show based on a popular water-slide toy… you’d better make sure your water supply is free of giardia — a parasite that can cause explosive diarrhea. And that’s exactly what happened last week on the set of Ultimate Slip N’ Slide, where about 40 crew members fell ill.

Fortunately everyone seems to be doing okay now. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and don’t forget to keep an eye on the details. Now, what’s for lunch…?
