New Westminster Councillor “surprised” Mayor Cote won’t seek re-election

Councillor Chuck Puchmayr says he is surprised by Mayor Cote’s decision not to run for the 2022 municipal election but he has no plans on replacing him. “I think this surprised a lot of people, I talked to [Cote] before the holidays and he did mention wanting to spend more time with his family.” Puchmayr says, like Cote, he is proud of the change they implemented and hopes to continue on the same note in 2022. “We need to make sure the progress in the city continues…we need to look at making sure there is a strong group of progressive people on council.” Related articles: Surrey mayor likely to run again in 2022 despite mischief charge: commentator Vancouver mayor, wife allegedly harassed at Yaletown shop over weekend Moving forward, Puchmayr says he hopes to make affordable housing a priority this year. “We are experiencing a homelessness crisis, there is a huge gap between those who have and those who have not.” Jonathan Cote, who served as the mayor of New Westminster for two terms and as a city councillor for three years, announced on Twitter he would not seek re-election. Cote tweeted the announcement on the first day of the new year, stating that “it’s time to take on my next adventure.” Dear New West, I hope everyone has had a good holiday season and I want to wish everyone a happy new year. The start of a new year is always a good time to reflect on the challenges of the past and chart a new course for the year ahead. 1/9 — Jonathan Cote (@jonathanxcote) January 1, 2022 While serving in the city’s governance, he said the council has accomplished a lot. Adding, he feels honored and proud to have been a part of the progress. “I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity I’ve had in local politics but I don’t see politics in my future,” Cote said. “I do think in some ways my next chapter will involve building better cities.” Municipal elections in B.C. will be held on Oct. 15, 2022.   – With files from Paul James
