Talking To Skeptics Of Astrology: An Introduction
Since it’s 2020, and Mars will be spending the rest of the year in Aries, and all we ever do is argue with people on the internet all day long anyway? Let’s put that abundant Mars mood to some good use. That’s why I will be writing a series here over the next few blog entries about the most common arguments that skeptics of astrology use against it.
Now don’t get me wrong: skepticism can be healthy. The moment you assume you’re right about everything is usually the moment you start being wrong. I myself have Saturn in the Ninth House, so I naturally tend to be a bit skeptical about belief systems. In fact I sometimes joke that I wish astrology would stop working, because that would make more sense.
And yet, despite that? Here’s me, still an astrologer, still watching it work. Go figure!
There is no need to go out and evangelize about astrology to those who don’t believe in it. But a large majority of the arguments that skeptics use against astrology simply break down under analysis. I respect skeptics for their critical thinking, but as it turns out? They can sometimes be lazy with that ability.
Even if you don’t feel you need to go out and start a brawl with Bill Nye the Science Guy over whether or not astrology is valid? There is no harm in listening to those who disagree with you. It can even be worthwhile to listen to their argument seriously. And then of course… it’s fun when you know how to block and counter-attack.
Besides: you know that Facebook friend of yours you’re always arguing with about something, and that friend refuses to listen to any evidence that contradicts him or her? Don’t be like that Facebook friend of yours. I’ll be breaking down all of the most common cases made against astrology, and showing you where they fall short. And of course, if it turns out I’m getting something wrong? Please let me know. I will hear you out.
