Language Lessons For The Twelve Signs: Cancer

(There are those who will tell you that “astrology is a language.” If you know much about languages, you know that sometimes one language will come up with a word or phrase for a unique concept that other languages haven’t caught onto — but maybe should have. In that spirit, we present this series.)

The Sign: Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

The Word: Frustfressen (German)

Meaning: Eating too much out of a sense of insecurity or frustration.

Example:

CANCER’S FRIEND: I saw your ex at the mall today. He seems to be doing well.

CANCER: Oh, that’s good. I have no regrets. Pass the potato chips.

CANCER’S FRIEND: Did you know he’s got a new girlfriend?

CANCER: No, I didn’t. Well, I hope he finds happiness. I’m over any attachment I had for him. Hey, we should get something to eat.

CANCER’S FRIEND: And he says hi. They really do seem happy together.

CANCER: Maybe we should order a pizza.

CANCER’S FRIEND: They were out celebrating her new modelling contract.

CANCER: Ach, das Frustfressen! I’m going to the buffet. Are you coming? If not, lock up when you leave. I’m going to be gone a while…
